Last night, I traveled in the vanguard of an invading force. We swept through foreign neighborhoods, ringing bells and giggling. Citizens loudly reacted in alarm – but we paid them no mind! We would not be stopped! There were dozens of us – wheeling through places no polite girl heads alone after dark. Luckily, there were almost 50 of us…

Some of us had coordinated our helmets to our outfits. Some had just dropped the kids off moments before escaping to the wheeled insurrection. Most were first-timers. But we were all united in our one goal! And that goal was… OMG, keep up. Please don’t let me be the slowest one in the crowd!

Actually – it was kindofa slow, easy pace. And that was the point – talking and exploring while cycling through the lovely streets of Wicker Park, Logan Square and some of what might have been Ukrainian Village…
Nor was I the only newbie to Chicago who couldn’t tell at some points what neighborhood we were in. A lot of us found out we had much more in common than we thought. Which was the point of the whole endeavor…

A nightcap at the Orbit Room cemented our newfound bikey friends, and then we all split off again to head home. A lovely evening, perfect weather, a nearly full-moon… and the knowledge that as I headed out into the night, I had a lot more company on the quiet streets than I ever realized.
